The Department of Respiratory, founded in the 1960s，is a modern diagnosis and treatment center and talent training base conducting medical treatment, education and scientific research on TCM respiratory diseases. It strives to inherit TCM classics and innovate in the TCM practice. In 1955,“Xiaochuan Paste”, developed from an ancient TCM formula, was first used in clinical practice. It has been studied and improved in many aspects such as herbal processing, preparation technology, acupoint's selection and treatment time, forming a standard practice process. In September 2014, a Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center was established, with a complete research team, advocating "simple medical treatment", and promoting the health concept of "chronic disease treatment starts from physical exercise".

At present, there are special outpatient clinics for lung nodules, smoking cessation by TCM, bronchial asthma and interstitial lung disease.

Under the leadership of chief physician Li Guoqin, a well-known expert on integrated TCM and western medicine, we have obtained remarkable effects on the treatments of bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchiectasis, and interstitial lung disease by applying integrated TCM and western medicine. We also use modern diagnosis and treatment methods to screen and prevent lung nodules, lung cancer, and sleep apnea syndrome, forming a distinctive feature of our department and relieving patients' suffering.

At present, we are carrying out a series of research projects in the fields of common chronic lung disease management, rehabilitation treatment, diagnosis and treatment data management software, etc., and committed to the internationalization of TCM pulmonology. All physicians in our department have obtained GCP qualification certificates, and we have completed over 10 herbal medicine clinical trials and over dozens of national, municipal and academy-level scientific research projects. Our department also serves as academic platform for the Computational Medicine Branch of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, the Health and Rehabilitation Branch of the Beijing Association of Chinese Medicine, the Respiratory Branch of the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine, the Pulmonary Disease Branch of the China Association of Chinese Medicine, the Environment and Health Branch of the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine and the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Branch of the Beijing Medical Association.
