The Department of Acupuncture and Encephalopathy, established in 1955,  is one of the earliest and largest acupuncture departments in China. The national acupuncture masters, such as, Zhu Lian, Gao Fengtong, Ye Xinqing, Zheng Yulin, had worked together in our department and left many valuable academic thoughts and experiences. Now the department has been developed into a large-scale specialty integrating acupuncture, neurology and rehabilitation and a construction unit of key specialty and key discipline of the State Administration of TCM.

The department has four divisions: acupuncture clinic, encephalopathy clinic, ward and rehabilitation room. Our featured techniques are elongated needle therapy on acupoint baliao, fire needle therapy, moxibustion with walnut shell, long round needle therapy, electric plum blossom needle therapy, moxibustion with reed tube, etc.

Diseases treated by acupuncture and with better results are stroke, cerebrospinal degeneration, Parkinson's disease, dizziness, headache, insomnia, trigeminal neuralgia, facial paralysis; pain on neck, shoulder, waist and leg; herpes zoster, eczema, urticaria; pediatric myopia/amblyopia; fundus disease, tinnitus and rhinitis. And the following are the diseases and medical fields that we focus on the study, they are ovarian dysfunction, irregular menstruation, menopausal syndrome, chronic prostatitis and pelvic floor pain, neurogenic bladder, frequent urination, urinary incontinence, dysuresia, infertility; indigestion, constipation, obesity, postpartum rehabilitation and facial beauty.  

We have successively undertaken more than 20 national and ministerial-level research programs such as the National Eleventh and Twelfth Five-Year Support Plans, 13th Five-Year Key Research and Development and National Key Special Projects, with a total fund of more than 30 million yuan.

We have won more than 20 second and third prizes of provincial and ministerial scientific and technological achievements and published more than 300 academic papers as the first achievement unit, including more than 100 SCI source journals.

The original papers published by top international/famous journals such as JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Allergy, Journal of Urology, American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology mark the top level of clinical medicine and scientific research of our department.
