The Department of Surgery was founded in 1955 together with the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. TCM, Western medicine and the combination of TCM and Western medicine are the main methods in this department in the management of various common diseases, frequently-occurring diseases and various complicated diseases.

Thanks to the hard work of elder generation, rich experiences have been obtained in the treatments of following diseases: vasculitis, phlebitis, cholecystitis, cholelithiasis, breast and thyroid diseases. And a secondary award from the Ministry of Health of China and Science and Technology Progress Award from China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences have been obtained.

With the continuous development of surgical science, the department currently has set up several academic groups:

1.vascular surgery, specialized in the treatment of following diseases by integration of herbal medicine, Western drug and surgery:

thromboangiitis obliterans, arteriosclerosis obliterans, diabetic foot, lower extremity superficial varicosity and deep venous valve dysfunction, lower extremity deep venous thrombosis

2.breast and endocrine surgery, specialized in the treatment of following diseases by integration of herbal medicine, Western drug and surgery:

Breast diseases, breast cancer, thyroid tumor, nodular goiter, hyperthyroidism, thyroid cancer

3.hernia and abdominal surgery, specialized in the repair of all kinds of tension-free hernia and abdominal wall defects by integration of herbal medicine and advanced artificial materials.

4.gastrointestinal surgery, specialized in speeding up the intestinal function recovery and protecting intestinal barrier function after various kinds of gastrointestinal surgeries by TCM.

5.hepatobiliary surgery, specialized in the treatment of following diseases by integration of herbal medicine, intervention therapy and surgery:

Gallbladder stones, intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile duct stones, bile duct cysts, hepatic cysts and abscesses, cholecystitis, cholangitis, pancreatitis, gallbladder cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, liver and pancreatic cancer.

In addition, the herbal medicine is well used in treating boils, carbuncle, erysidia, and ecthyma, forming TCM features of the department. And except for expert outpatient clinics, the department also has special outpatient clinics for " sore caused by vascular disease ", "erysipelas", and "breast diseases".
