The Department of Ophthalmology, founded in 1955, is one of the earliest bases of ophthalmic treatment, research, and education that integrate traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medicine. There are 20 beds, 6 doctors with senior professional titles, 1 nurse with senior professional title, 2 medical doctors and 6 medical masters.
In our medical treatment, we adhere to the integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment. The combination of acupuncture and TCM is our advantages and we pursues first-class laser surgery. Over the past few decades, our department has been developing and expanding under the leadership of many senior experts, including Yang Weizhou, Wei Wengui, Yang Jun, and Tang Yaozhi, becoming a well-known specialty of TCM in China and abroad. "Cataract needle extraction" has successfully restored the sight of many patients around the world, including the leaders of many countries, and won the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 1984. At present, on the basis of distinct theories of TCM, we has achieved remarkable results in the treatment of macular hemorrhage and edema ocular disease by using the innovative syndrome differentiation theory of chronic fundus oculi. In the 1990s, our department took the lead in cataract phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens implantation in China, and now precision cataract refractive surgery has been widely used in clinical practice. In 2003, we performed innovative filtration surgery for refractory glaucoma using the flat ciliary body, and won the Second Prize of Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in 2014 and the Third Prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of the Chinese Society of TCM in 2015.
Recent years, we have successfully applied minimally invasive vitreoretinal surgery to help patients who suffered from vitreous hematoma and retinal detachment to regain their vision. Our department has a complete set of advanced medical instrument and surgical equipment, including OPTOS wide-angle laser scanning fundus imaging system, optical coherence tomography, ophthalmic ultrasonic biological microscope, corneal topography, corneal endothelial microscope measuring instrument, ophthalmic optical measuring instrument, multiple focal eye electrophysiological instrument, computer vision, eye ultrasonic tester, confocal laser fundus angiography, vitreous glass cutting ultrasonic emulsification machine, multiple wavelength krypton laser, YAG laser, etc. we also have an ultra clean operating room in which we conduct comprehensive inspection for all kinds of eye diseases and provides condition for accuracy diagnosis and reliable treatment. As a key specialty cooperative members of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, our department has undertaken a number of projects about the diseases which we have advantages to treat. In these projects, we combine traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine to treat diseases such as optic atrophy, macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, retinal vein occlusion, diabetic retinopathy, viral keratitis, dry eye syndrome, children myopia, amblyopia and get curative effect. At present, our department has more than ten kinds of hospital preparations.
For researches, our department has undertaken a number of projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Key Scientific Research Projects, and many projects in the levels of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Chinese Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. In these projects, we dedicate to the research of diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, refractory glaucoma and other major blinding eye diseases.
As a national training center for doctors and masters, our department has trained more than 50 doctoral and graduate students. We have hosted many national training courses for senior ophthalmologists and have trained talents all over the country.
Since more than 60 years ago, the Department of Ophthalmology at Guang 'anmen Hospital has been adhering to the principle that "promotes TCM and values both Chinese medicine and Western medicine." We strive to be the guardians of the light in the eyes of more patients through our first-class medical techniques.
