The Department of Proctology was established in 1956. With high reputation in the field, it is the earliest established specialty in TCM proctology. At present, all 17 physicians in this department received master degree or higher. Among them, there are 11 physicians with M.D. degree including 1 doctoral supervisor and 4 master supervisors. Currently, we have 88 beds in the ward of the department, and more than 3000 patients are admitted and treated each year. Our department leads the field with our expertise in diagnosis and treatment of various common, difficult and critical anorectal diseases, and we are especially impactful nationwide in the treatment of hemorrhoids, anal fistula and rectal prolapse.

In recent years, our laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer has been widely praised by patients. We have undertaken 7 national, 11 provincial and ministerial , 4 municipal scientific research projects, and received more than 10 awards for scientific research.

Over the years, the department has won honor and reputation for China through carrying out medical collaborations and academic exchanges, making regular visits, and giving lectures in more than 10 countries and regions in Asia, Europe and North America. Meanwhile, our department has educated a group of professionals from all over the country. We have trained more than 60 doctoral and master students and 3 postdocs. Many of them have become key members or national well-known experts in the local anorectal diseases prevention and treatment. Our department is recognized as "the cradle of anorectal experts in TCM" by peers in the field.

Our department has been acknowledged as “the National Anorectal Medical Center”, “the national key discipline and specialty of TCM proctology” and “the key specialty of TCM proctology in Beijing” by the National Administration of TCM during the period from "11th five-year plan" to "13th five-year plan". In 2019, under the leadership of the director Li Huashan, the department is approved by National Administration of TCM as the construction unit of regional center of TCM anorectal diagnosis and treatment, and become a veritable "National Team" of TCM proctology.
