The Department of Geriatrics has been conducting clinical diagnosis and treatment, teaching and scientific research of senile diseases since its establishment in 1986. The department currently has a "Senior TCM Expert Studio" led by chief physician Zhu Jiangui, with 9 chief physicians, 6 associate chief physicians, 3 attending physicians and 2 residents. Among them 2 are postdoctoral fellows, 5 are doctoral degree holders and 7 are master degree holders.

By using the integrated TCM and Western medicine, we have accumulated rich experience in the diagnosis and treatment of common and difficult diseases in geriatrics, and gradually formed our own characteristics and achieved better effect  in the treatment of senile diseases, especially for cerebrovascular diseases, cognitive dysfunction, headache, dizziness, senile sleep disorders, osteoporosis, diabetes, thyroid disease, elderly hypertension, hyperlipidemia, coronary heart disease, menopausal syndrome, sweat syndrome, malnutrition, chronic pain, constipation, urinary incontinence and other diseases. The special outpatient clinics for memory disorders, headaches and osteoporosis have been set up.

Following diseases are the "special diseases" of our department

Memory disorders and Alzheimer's disease:

Based on the principle of "preventive treatment of disease", for patients with menopausal memory loss, brain atrophy, memory loss duo to white matter degeneration, or memory loss due to other reasons, their memory and intelligence will be tested and evaluated, and they will be managed by integrated TCM and Western medicine, for preventing further loss of memory and the occurrence of senile dementia.

Osteoporosis:

We focus on osteoporosis screening, improvement of bone density, functions of skeletal muscle, spleen, stomach and kidney. We guide patients how to monitor and evaluate bone mass from the time of bone loss, guide their diet, exercise and medicated diet to prevent falls and fractures.

Menopausal syndrome:

We evaluate various symptoms such as mood disorders, insomnia, hyperhidrosis, heart palpitation, arthralgias, etc. that occur during menopause, and make diagnosis and treat the disease by using TCM methods.

Senile debilitating diseases:

We diagnose and evaluate the patient's debilitating state caused by various reasons, and use herbal medicine for systemic adjusting to reduce the debilitating state of patients.

Our department, conducting the research of anti-aging with TCM, is the deputy director unit of the Sub- Association of TCM，China Association for Alzheimer’s Disease and the Professional Committee for Health and Rehabilitation of Beijing Association of Chinese Medicine. We have undertaken more than 10 national, provincial and ministerial projects, and have won over 20 awards, including 3 national new product certificates, 4 science and technology progress awards from the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine, 5 science and technology awards from the China Association of Chinese Medicine ,and 8 science and technology awards from the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences.
