The Department of Oncology, established in 1963, is a national-level oncology specialty of TCM and integrated TCM and Western medicine, conducting medical care, education and scientific research, and enjoying a high reputation at home and abroad. The department is currently the National Regional TCM Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Center and Beijing Teleconsultation Center, has excellent training team for Beijing TCM Resident Standardized Training and has key research rooms and tumor molecular biology tertiary laboratory of the State Administration of TCM as well. It is also the chairman unit of the International Chinese Medicine Oncology Alliance and the China Alliance of TCM Oncology Management. The department serves as the affiliated units of academic groups such as the Oncology Branch of China Association of Chinese Medicine, Oncology Professional Committee of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, Oncology Pharmaceutical Research Committee of China Association of TCM and recognized as the lead unit of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei TCM Cooperative Development of Oncology Key Specialty Alliance and Capital Core Specialty of Beijing National TCM Key Specialty Radiation Project (1+X+N).
The department is the first batch of master's and doctoral teaching units and postdoctoral research centers approved by the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China. It has 1 national famous TCM doctor, 2 capital famous TCM doctors, 2 young and middle-aged TCM doctors loved by the people in the capital, 2 national TCM clinical talents, many professional talents, including young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions approved by the National Health and Family Planning Commission, Beijing Science and Technology Rising Stars, 8 doctoral supervisors and 14 master supervisors. 4 renowned TCM master workstations (rooms) have been established and over 100 master and doctoral students and over 30 postdocs have been successively trained.
We run 200 beds, discharging over 3,500 hospitalized patients annually. We have more than 250,000 outpatient visits every year and at the same time we take care the health of the central government leaders.
Tumor treatment is based on TCM treatment methods such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage, rehabilitation training and external herbal treatment, supplemented by modern treatment methods such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, interventional therapy, argon helium knife and radiofrequency ablation, which can significantly improve clinical efficacy and improve quality of life and prolong survival time of patients.
As an oncology drug clinical trial institution of the State Food and Drug Administration, we have successively conducted clinical trials of 43 new herbal medicines for cancer treatment and independently developed Xi Huang Jie Du Capsules, Fei Liu Ping Syrup, Fu Zheng Jie Du Oral Liquid, Jian Pi Yi Shen Granule, Ruan jian Xiao Liu Tablets and etc.
We are the first team in China to carry out research on tumors' therapeutic principles of strengthening the body resistance and consolidating the constitution. Relying on the cancer industry association, we took the lead in formulating the diagnosis and treatment guidelines for 10 common malignant tumors such as lung cancer, stomach cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer, etc. and the "WHO Western Pacific Region TCM Evidence-based Medicine Clinical Guidelines (Lung cancer)". We organized the national TCM experts to compile the China's first "Clinical Guidelines for TCM Treatment of Tumors", which was translated into English and promoted at home and abroad, filling the gaps at domestic and overseas.
We have successively undertaken national-level scientific research projects of the National Science and Technology Support Plan and the National Natural Science Foundation of China from the "6th Five-Year Plan" to the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan". In the past 5 years, we have presided over 30 new scientific research projects at the provincial and ministerial level or above (including 21 national projects) and obtained 5 invention patents. We have published over 300 papers in core academic journals at home and abroad, including more than 40 SCI papers and more than 20 monographs, won 2 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and 3 first prizes of the Science and Technology Award of the China Association of Chinese Medicine and the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine.
We have successively established cooperative relations with clinical research institutions in the United States, Australia, South Korea, Singapore and other countries. Since 2007, we have started to cooperate with the National Cancer Center (NCI), Mayo Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Katherine Cancer Center, carried out clinical and basic research and jointly cultivated more than 10 doctoral (post) doctors.
We will focus on improving the clinical efficacy of TCM in the prevention and treatment of tumors, strengthening scientific research, giving full play to the unique advantages of TCM, and providing quality services to patients.
